2010 Pay Negotiations

UCEA’s extensive consultation with member HEIs for the 2010/11 pay round took place during February 2010, both in a series of five face-to-face meetings around the UK and through a formal written consultation. The dates of three formal New JNCHES (Joint Negotiation Committee for Higher Education Staff) meetings were agreed as:29 March, 19 April and 5 May 2010.  An additional fourth meeting was arranged for Friday 28 May 2010.

UCEA received written confirmation from both EIS and UCU that they wished to register a dispute after this meeting.  This procedure requires a minimum of two dispute resolution procedure meetings. The first of these meetings took place on 22 June with the second taking place on 9 July. Another dispute resolution procedure meeting took place on 27 July. Acas assistance may be the next step but this has to be agreed by all parties.
The final New JNCHES meeting took place on 28 July.
Employers confirmed that the 0.4% consolidated pay offer was the maximum increase that could be offered. However, this offer will be subject to review in late October should there be no settlement. The employers also offered to develop a new Training and Development initiative and work jointly with the unions on a range of other issues in the recently established working groups. All of the unions, bar UCU, are now consulting with their executive bodies and are expected to report back in the coming weeks. UCU rejected all aspects of the offer.
