About Health and Safety

The UCEA Board has established a Health and Safety Committee to act as a forum for the cross-fertilisation of ideas across all the different professional groups which have an interest in health and safety management, principles and practices within higher education. Employer-led and informed by experience across the sector, the Health and Safety Committee provides advice, guidance and examples of good practice on all matters related to health and safety in higher education.

The Health and Safety Committee supports higher education institutions by:

  • Providing guidance, often in collaboration with bodies such as the University Safety and Health Association, on issues ranging from managing stress at work and placements and fieldtrips, to the safe use of lasers in universities.
  • Providing updates on existing guidance.
  • Arranging seminars on a range of health and safety-related themes.
  • Providing direct advice.
  • Acting as a focus and contact point on health and safety issues.

The UCEA Health and Safety Committee has produced a sector-level Health, Safety and Wellbeing Plan for 2011-15, under which there is an annual Action Plan:
