During the 2009/10 pay negotiations UCEA listened to the trade union concerns about job security and explained the limitations of UCEA’s remit in this respect. The trade unions sought a ‘national agreement’ on the avoidance of redundancies but became open to other approaches. Recognising the constraints upon the UCEA mandate and that the management of staffing matters, be it in recruitment, promotion or in the handling of any staff reductions and potential redundancies, is a matter for each HEI as an independent employer, Acas encouraged us to consider an alternative approach.
