Workforce Planning and Organisational Change  : Case Studies of Practice in Higher Education Institutions

This report sets out the findings from five case studies commissioned in April 2011 by the New JNCHES Sustainability Issues Working Group. The case studies were conducted to discover how managers and unions in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) can work together to avoid, or mitigate the effects of, compulsory redundancies in the context of organisational change.

An Insider's Guide to Finance and Accounting in Higher Education

This Guide has been commissioned by the Working Group to help anyone involved in higher education, especially employers’ and trade union representatives, understand the technical basis of the annual accounts of higher education institutions (HEIs) and the techniques they use to manage their finances. It explains the main concepts and accountants’ jargon found in those accounts (or financial statements, as they’re more usually known).

If you are interested in receiving printed copies for circulation around your HEI, please email m.whittaker@ucea.ac.uk for more information

The Financial Health and Sustainability of the HE sector - interim report

This is an interim report, which updates section four of the December 2008 'Review of Higher Education Finance and Pay Data'. It is intended that this will be updated again later in 2011 when more data on the sector will be available.

New JNCHES - Values relating to sustainability in HEIs

This statement of values sets out ten values recognised by employer and trade union members of the SIWG as relating to the sustainability of HE institution. The statement takes as its starting point the mission of the HE sector as outlined by the Dearing report in 1997. In the light of this, it goes on to consider the values contributing to the sustainability of HE institutions, recognising that successful sustainability depends upon innovation and responsiveness to developments in knowledge, technology and other factors and the effective management of the institution’s resources.
