Pay & Conditions

There have been significant changes and developments in Higher Education employment conditions in recent years.  UCEA has consulted with institutions and negotiated with unions to modernise pay and conditions in Universities and Colleges. Central to this is the Framework Agreement, which provides a framework to modernise pay arrangements with the specific aim of promoting equality, transparency and harmonisation to ensure equal pay is delivered for work of equal value. This is the largest human resources initiative ever undertaken in the sector.

The 2006 pay negotiations were lengthy, complicated and intense but finally resolved with a three-year pay agreement with all unions and an overall total pay increase of 13.1 per cent by 2009.

The agreement also provides for two important reviews:
  • Review of the Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff (JNCHES) by July 2007
  • Review of HE Financial and Pay Data in autumn 2008
UCEA also has national level responsibility for Clinical Academic Salaries.  UCEA’s work in relation to clinical academics is guided by its Clinical Academic Staff Advisory Group (CASAG) which provides a forum for debate on issues affecting doctors and dentists – and increasingly other health professionals – employed by HEIs.
