UCEA XpertHR Pay Club Survey

The Pay Club provides data on all staff roles below those included in UCEA’s Senior Staff Remuneration Survey. It is carried out annually by UCEA in conjunction with salary survey specialist XpertHR.

The 2017 Pay Club Survey is now published. The membership fee this year was £675 plus VAT which provides access to the report and benchmarking tools as well as the ability to request bespoke salary tables. Data submission is free and members can decide to purchase the Pay Club membership at a later date. Only HEIs that have contributed to the survey have the option to access Pay Club data.

Survey overview

The survey provides confidential online access to a comprehensive database of salary information covering the whole of HE and access to benchmark data for many comparator roles across the economy.

Visit the XpertHR website to watch a video demo of the benchmarking tools. The 2015 user group presentation provides a more detailed overview of the survey report features (UCEA login required):

Participating HEIs receive a full and in-depth analysis of salaries by:

  • Job level and function
  • HE sector group (e.g. GuildHE, The Russell Group, University Alliance, Million +)
  • Type of institution (i.e. pre-92, post-92 or HE college)
  • Nation/region of the UK
  • HEI income

To maximise the benefit of the survey for benchmarking purposes, participating HEIs also receive the following:

  • Commercial sector comparisons for key roles (e.g. in IT, HR, Finance, Marketing and General Administration).
  • Online job pricing, enabling HEIs to query the survey database directly.
  • Benchmarking groups and individuals - simple spreadsheets which show HEIs how their roles and individual staff members compare to the market, clearly highlighting those which fall under or over the market and by how much.
  • Table viewer and job titles wizard to help you match roles more quickly.
  • Confidential data - only named recipients receive a copy of the survey report and all online tools are password protected. As a “club survey” the data is exclusively available to participating HEIs and cannot be obtained any other way.

In addition, the following supplementary reports are available to participants who contribute data in the respective areas:

  • Business school analysis - separate analysis of staff within business schools will be made available free of charge for those organisations providing data in this area.
  • Protected characteristics reports - a supplementary report covering ratios and pay differentials will be provided to institutions who supply equal opportunities data.

New to the 2016 report:

  • The basic and total pay tables will be extended to also show upper and lower decile pay.
  • Two additional fields will be collected in the survey to enable analysis of pay by length of service, to further inform users of the protected characteristics reports of potential causes of pay gaps. The two additional fields are ‘date service commenced’ and ‘date role commenced’.
