UCEA announces new Chair and Deputy Chairs

The Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) is delighted to announce that Professor Paul Curran, Vice-Chancellor of City University London, is UCEA’s new Chair. Professor Curran will succeed Professor Keith Burnett on 8 September 2011 and will hold the post for three years.

UCEA can also confirm the appointment of two Deputy Chairs, Professor John Brooks, Vice-Chancellor, Manchester Metropolitan University, and Paul Jagger, Pro Chancellor and Chair of Council, University of Bradford and Deputy Chair of the Committee of University Chairs. This new model, first suggested by Professor Curran, has been fully endorsed by UCEA’s Board as it allows for improved representation, with two deputies able to contribute on a range of specific areas of interest and experience.

Commenting on his new position and the model, Professor Curran, said: “I am delighted to have been appointed Chair of UCEA during a time of significant change for everyone involved with UK higher education. There will undoubtedly be considerable uncertainty as a result of rapid divergence in the financial fortunes of subject areas and institutions; the need for continuing pay restraint at a time of higher inflation and the ongoing challenge of pension reform.

“I would like to pay tribute to Professor Keith Burnett who has Chaired UCEA so successfully and with such good humour. He has developed a model and style of communication with the membership and beyond that will serve us exceedingly well in the years to come. I look forward to working closely and constructively with the HE trade unions on both pay and non-pay issues”.

Jocelyn Prudence, Chief Executive of UCEA added: “We are delighted that Professor Curran has been elected as UCEA’s new Chair alongside two excellent deputies. His experience from positions at a number of institutions and knowledge of HR issues will be much valued in leading UCEA and its members during these testing times. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank UCEA’s outgoing Chair, Professor Burnett, for his dedication and excellent leadership during these past two years.”

UCEA’s Board has also welcomed additional new members recently. Linda Pollard OBE, Pro-Chancellor/Chairman for the University of Leeds joined the Board in July, and Geoff Dawson, Pro Chancellor and Chair of Board of Governors at Sheffield Hallam University and a Deputy Chair of the CUC and Julie Lydon, Vice Chancellor of the University of Glamorgan who both joined the Board on 1 September.
