This conference will provide participants with an opportunity to hear from and discuss the new apprenticeship levy arrangements with key policymakers and stakeholders.

Speakers from BIS will explain the detail of the levy and how to access funds and will feed into the discussions on the implications for HEIs.

The day will include plenty of time for discussion with speakers to enable questions of clarification and opportunities for participants to pool thoughts and ideas on the way forward, including how current staff development programmes might be incorporated into the new arrangements.

The programme will include the following sessions and speakers:

  • Nicola Carter, Head of HR Advice, UCEA will present on the current extent of HEI involvement in apprenticeships.
  • Charlotte Bown, Head of Communications, Stakeholder Engagement and Project Management for the Apprenticeships Levy at the Apprenticeships Directorate at BIS will outline arrangements for apprenticeship fees, funding, the levy and digital vouchers and will then open to the floor for questions and discussion.
  • Speakers from Apprenticeships Standards Development at BIS and from the University Vocational Awards Council (UVAC) have been invited to discuss the new types of degree and higher level apprenticeships that will be required and the role of HEIs in the delivery and assessment of apprenticeships at higher levels.
  • Geoffrey Mead, Partner at Eversheds will present a legal update on employing apprentices, including contractual issues and employing younger workers.
  • Linda Holliday, Director of Capacity and Skills Development at the MRC and Mark Gardiner, Head of Operations, MRC Harwell will give an insight into the MRC’s role in leading the Animal Technology Trailblazer Apprenticeships scheme and the MRC’s own preparations for the new levy.
  • Teresa Frith, Senior Skills Policy Manager at the Association of Colleges will provide an opportunity for participants to engage with a training provider and hear how they are preparing for the new arrangements.
  • The University of Liverpool and Keele University will share their institutions’ approaches to apprenticeships and thoughts on future arrangements.
  • Round table discussions will explore the key questions around timescales, implementation and access to funding.

The day will run from 10.00 am (registration from 9.30 am) ending at 3.30 pm.
