Getting the most from UCEA membership and Understanding the sector's legacy pay and employment frameworks

10:30AM, 16 November 2017
Central London

  1. Programme
  2. Booking

On Thursday 16 November UCEA will host two members’ only events in central London. Our popular Getting the most from UCEA membership session will take place in the morning. After lunch we will hold a briefing session Understanding the sector’s legacy pay and employment frameworks. Colleagues may choose to attend either or both sessions.

Getting the most from UCEA membership will run in the morning from 10.30 am and end with a networking lunch at 1.00 pm (registration from 10.00 am). It is designed for members who are new to the sector or those in new roles, as well as those interested to learn more about UCEA’s current programme of work and latest services.

The half-day session provides an overview of UCEA’s role and key areas of work including the range of activities and services we offer. Participants will have an opportunity to explore how our services can support their institution. The event will be of particular interest to members with institutional oversight of staffing and HR, for example Pro-Vice-Chancellors with an HR portfolio, and senior colleagues in HR, finance, payroll and communications departments.

The areas covered will include the multi-employer pay negotiations, UCEA’s research and surveys on reward and workforce issues, pensions, HR policy advice, institutional support on organisational change, clinical academics, health and safety, and communications support. The session will end with a networking lunch with UCEA officers which provides an opportunity for informal discussions.

Understanding the sector’s legacy pay and employment frameworks will take place in the afternoon from 1.45 pm. It will run for no more than two hours, so the latest finish time will be 3.45 pm. The session - led by Helen Fairfoul, Chief Executive and Nicola Carter, Head of HR Advice - will cover:

  • The 1990 ‘national contract’ for academic staff (and HE2000 in Scotland)
  • Statutes and the model statute documents
  • The Framework Agreement and its implementation in institutions
  • The New JNCHES role

The purpose of the session is to explain and we hope de-mystify the origins and content of the various legacy documents and arrangements and their status and use in institutional settings.

It will aim to help people understand what is possible and negotiable, and share the information and intelligence that UCEA has gathered for members. It will touch on some national union perspectives and explain the residual role of New JNCHES.

This session is open to all members but may be particularly useful to those who are newer to the sector.

We realise that not all the people who may find the session useful will be able to attend. We therefore plan to make the core UCEA content available in the near future as a members’ resource on our website.
