In pursuit of institutional success and sustainability: Directions for our academic workforce, which took place in Vancouver, Canada was the second international HE employers’ conference convened by UCEA, Faculty Bargaining Services (Canada) and the Australian Higher Education Industrial Association (AHEIA). Following the successful conference in London in July 2012, the conference was organised and hosted by our Faculty Bargaining Services (FBS) colleagues.
The conference took place at the Bayshore Westin Hotel, Vancouver on Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 October 2014. The main conference was preceded by a pre-conference workshop on Conflict Management on Monday 20 October 2014, and was followed by a post-conference Study Tour on Thursday 23 October.

This report on contingent academic employment was written in collaboration with UCEA's higher education employer association equivalents in Australia and Canada. The report provides three in-depth country studies that cover the different types of contractual arrangements in place, trends in casual/contingent employment, and union strategies that have been observed in response to the use of flexible contracts by higher education employers. The paper was first presented at the conference in Vancouver.
