Immigration

Over recent years UK universities have attracted significant numbers of international academic staff, with non EU staff now forming 12 per cent of the total academic workforce according to data from HESA (2016/17).

The Points Based Immigration System (PBS) was introduced by the Home Office in 2008 and is co-ordinated by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The system has been constantly evolving ever since.

For the latest news on the PBS go to the Points Based Immigration System section.

The UKVI undertakes 'compliance visits' to evaluate the compliance of sponsors with immigration law and to prevent illegal working. There are case studies that summarise the experiences of four HEIs that had complaince visits in late 2012.

Issues relating to the recruitment and appointment of external examiners have been raised through the immigration HR network and members can access a report on sector employment practice for this group pf staff.
