The European Charter constitutes a framework for researchers, employers and funders which invites them to act responsibly and as professionals within their working environment. It sets the standard by which each of the constituent member states establishes good practice in both research and the employment practices of organisations that employ researchers.

In response to the European Charter and a number of changes in employment law, such as the Fixed Term Employment Regulations, the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers was established in 2008.


Vitae is the UK organisation set up to promote and support the personal, professional and career development of doctoral researchers and research staff in higher education institutions and research institutes.

Vitae produces resources for researchers and employers, and is also responsible for co-ordinating the bi-annual survey of researchers and principal investigators:

The UK Research Integrity Office

The UK Research Integrity Office (UKRIO) is an independent body which provides advice and guidance about the conduct of research. UKRIO covers all subject areas and all types of research. They are available for advice on the conduct of research.


Supporting Early Career Researchers in HE: HEI case studies and outputs of joint work (2013-14) from UCEA, the European Federation of Education Employers (EFEE) and the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE). Focus areas include gender equality; the environment for early career researchers; and the mobility of academic staff within Europe.

Developing the next generation of research staff: Vitae and Brunel University produced guidance and toolkits to support the leadership development of early career researchers and academics.
