The fundamentals of employment law is a lively and highly interactive two-part workshop aimed at HR team members who have limited knowledge of UK employment law or managers who wish to gain this knowledge. The workshops will help participants gain an understanding of the principles and main provisions of employment law and provide practical advice in applying the law. There will also be the opportunity to raise queries and share experiences with an expert tutor and with fellow participants from the HE sector.

Day 1 - Employment rights - takes place on Wednesday 2 October and covers:

  • The legal framework
  • Contracts of employment (including part-time, fixed-term contracts)
  • A concise guide to individual employment rights
  • Discipline, dismissals and grievances – case studies
  • The law on unfair dismissal
  • Redundancy and reorganisations

Day 2 - Equal opportunities - takes place on Thursday 3 October and covers:

  • The law on discrimination – principles & practice (including: sex, race, sexual orientation, religion/belief and age discrimination)
  • Equal pay
  • Equality and diversity in the workplace
  • Disability discrimination 
  • What's new in employment law - the latest developments including Brexit
  • Trade union and collective issues

Terms and conditions of booking
Confirmation of your place, including registration details and joining instructions, will be sent to you by email no later than two weeks before the event. 
 
We would advise you not to make any travel arrangements until you have received confirmation of your place. Please contact UCEA (contact details below) if you need to obtain confirmation of your place earlier than the standard two weeks prior to the event in order to purchase cheaper advance fares, as we may be able to confirm your place at an earlier date to facilitate this. 
 
The booking fee is chargeable for cancellations made less than 14 calendar days before the course/event. The substitution of named individuals is allowed at any time.

A number of institutions have hosted The fundamentals of employment law course on their own premises.

This enables the workshop to be run on a bespoke basis; delegates are trained in the use of the specific policies in operation at the institution.

With no participant travel costs, it also offers a high cost saving for the institution.

A bespoke course can also cover specific areas of employment law in more or less detail.
