HR analytics and data management – using insight to deliver business benefits is a practical workshop designed to show how HR analytics can be used in an HE setting to solve business problems and enable improved HR management, including workforce planning.

It will demonstrate how organisational performance can be driven with the use of HR evidence and data. It has been designed to help attendees consider how they can become better informed by using data to enable them to anticipate upcoming challenges to manage and mitigate risks; thereby improving organisational decision making.

Using business problems identified in other workshops delivered by the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) for UCEA this academic year, the facilitators will follow an established method of creating a hypothesis and testing it through data collection and analysis. They will emphasise the importance of managing client expectations, reporting in a client friendly way and ensuring agreed actions are followed.

The workshop facilitator, Peter Reilly of the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), will deliver short presentations explaining relevant tools and techniques illustrated using real-life examples of practice, and will encourage delegate participation via questions and group discussions.

Areas covered will include:

  • HR analytics definitions and scope.
  • Enablers of HR analytics, including staffing, skills, data, technology, executive support etc.
  • Barriers to using HR analytics and how these might be overcome.
  • An easy to follow methodology.
  • Discussing how these tools can most effectively be used in an HE setting.
  • Understanding in more detail the sort of problems to be tackled.
  • Reviewing the available evidence, both inside and outside an organisation.
  • Considering what data are needed; checking what is available and how to collect them.
  • Reviewing forms of analysis.
  • Emphasising the importance of ‘telling the story’ and looking at reporting techniques.
  • Thinking of what actions are needed to address the issues.
  • Identifying who needs to be influenced, when and how.

The day will run between 10.15 am and 3.30 pm (registration from 9.45 am) at a central Edinburgh location. A timed programme can be found below.
