Dan Julius

Dan is the Senior Vice President and Provost at New Jersey City University and Adjunct Professor in the Higher Education Program at New York University. In past years he has been an affiliated faculty member at the Cornell University Higher Education Research Institute, a Visiting Scholar at the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley and an adjunct faculty member at Stanford University, Graduate Schools of Business and Education, and the Graduate School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire. Dan has served as the Academic Vice President/Provost in three institutions/systems; in Alaska, Illinois and New Jersey, a Land Grant system, private liberal arts university and comprehensive state university. He has also been the vice president or senior director responsible for collective bargaining in two state university systems, the California State University and the Vermont State Colleges, and the University of San Francisco, a Jesuit University. He has been a long-term employer consultant on collective bargaining for the University of California, and post-secondary systems in Hawaii, Oregon, Florida, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Illinois, and for institutions in Michigan, Ohio, New York, Maine, Rhode Island, Arizona and Massachusetts and recently served as a member of the negotiating team for the New Jersey State Colleges and Universities. 
He is a former President of the College and University Personnel Association (now CUPA/HR) and the Academy for Academic Personnel Administrators. Dan has edited over 20 books and published 85 articles, book chapters, reviews and manographs and made over 165 presentations. His research, with Nicholas DiGiovanni, was cited in recent NLRB decisions on graduate student unionization at both Columbia and Yale University. He holds an undergraduate degree from The Ohio State University, studied at Cornell University (ILR), and earned a masters and doctorate at Columbia University. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the Center for Organizations Research at Stanford University. Commencing on August 1, 2019, Dan will have completed his term as Provost and Senior VP and begin a year sabbatical during which time he will be a Visiting Fellow at the School of Management at Yale University. 


Dan will be chairing Plenary session 3: Developments in enterprise bargaining – Australian and Canadian perspectives on Tuesday 9 July with contributions from Stuart Andrews, Executive Director, AHEIAIan Callahan, Chief Operating Officer, Curtin UniversityJames Butler, Director, CAUBO/FBS and Nancy Sullivan, Field Officer CAUBO/FBS.

Dan will be contibuting to the Our post docs and teaching assistants: what are Canadian and US institutions doing? workshop on Wednesday 10 July with Professor Barry Miller, Senior Policy Advisor Labour Relations at York University
Dan will also be contributing to the closing plenary session Conference reflections on the HR leadership challenges. He will be joined by Jane Booth, Executive Director: People, Talent and Culture, University of South AustraliaDr Thomas Chase, Provost and Vice-President (Academic), University of Regina and Chair, CAUBO/FBS Management Committee, and Alison Johns, Chief Executive, Advance HE. The session is chaired by Dr Linda Holbeche.
