Annual Clinical Academic staff: Strategic issues conference

UCEA Annual Conference on Clinical Academic staff: Strategic issues  – Tuesday 3 February, Central London

This one-day, in-person conference in central London on Tuesday 3 February is designed for HEI and NHS colleagues responsible for policy and practice around the employment of clinical academic staff. 

Tailored for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that employ healthcare academics and collaborate closely with NHS Trusts. It explores key employment issues arising from joint working arrangements, including contracts, governance, and the complexities of managing staff across HE and NHS systems. The sessions will offer strategic and practical guidance on navigating differing employment frameworks, ensuring compliance, and supporting effective partnership working.

Who should attend

Senior HR professionals, Deans and senior leaders from medical, dental, and healthcare sciences schools are all welcome to attend, given the strategic importance of these employment arrangements.

HEI colleagues are encouraged to share the conference details with their NHS partner equivalents in case they would find the conference relevant and wish to attend.  Interested NHS colleagues can email events@ucea.ac.uk to enquire about attending.

Programme

Running between 10.00 and 3.30 pm the conference will be chaired by Professor Jenny Higham, Vice-Chancellor, University of Suffolk, Deputy Chair of the UCEA Board and Chair of UCEA’s Clinical Academic Staff Advisory Committee (CASAG).

  • The Employment of academic GPs - the St Andrews' approach - Professor Frank Sullivan, Professor of Primary Care, School of Medicine and Ellen MacMillan, HR Business Partner, University of St Andrews
  • Supporting Clinical Academic careers: National perspectives and case studies for attracting and retaining talent – Jeremy Levy, Associate Dean of the NIHR Academy (integrated pathways)
  • Legal Update on the Employment Rights Act – New Rules New Risks: Implications for University – NHS Partnerships - Helen Mortlock, Legal Director, Eversheds Sutherland
    [This session will explore the key challenges arising from the Employment Rights Act 2025 and the implications for jointly managing risks across University–NHS partnerships. It will also examine the operational impact of new regulations around the management of sexual misconduct, including a case study to illustrate practical issues and shared responsibilities.]
  • Round table discussions - providing insightful discussions and valuable networking opportunities to explore the future of clinical academic employment.

Booking and prices

Until 5.00 pm on Tuesday 20 January a special early-bird price of £425 (VAT free) is available for UCEA members. The standard UCEA member attendee price is £449 (VAT free) per place.

When booking there is the option of paying for a place by credit/debit card or to be invoiced.
