HE cyclical crises: disputes & disruptions with reflections & preparations

HE cyclical crises: disputes & disruptions with reflections & preparations on Tuesday 1 November is UCEA’s annual communications conference, bringing together HR and communications specialists to consider shared communications challenges within the sector.

This year’s in-person conference takes place against a background of unprecedented industrial action, changes and challenges. One-off crisis response is no longer sufficient in our sector as we have entered an ongoing period of cyclical crises. The blend of presentations and case studies reflects on recent IA and preparation for what is already proving to be an extremely challenging autumn and future for HE employers. These speakers will share communications crises challenges with sector-specific issues and beyond.

This in-person conference will be chaired by Professor Graham Baldwin, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Central Lancashire, Deputy Chair of the UCEA Board and Chair of UCEA’s Communications Strategy Working Group. Raj Jethwa, UCEA Chief Executive will update us on the sector pay disputes, further industrial action and other challenges in support of our members.

We are also pleased to welcome four case study presentations:

‘Managing in a maelstrom’: Dealing with concerted and personalised negative union campaigns: Goldsmiths, University of London
Dr Steve Lake, Director, Communications, Marketing & Recruitment

Joint communications challenges with campus closures: City, University of London
Mary Luckiram, Director of Human Resources and Tim Longden, Director of Marketing & External Relations, City, University of London

Navigating industrial action in the health sector
Peter Gordon, Acting Director of National Negotiations and Representation, The British Medical Association (BMA)

When the big guns come to town; PR & HR unite when reinforcements join the line
Deborah Mattock, Executive Director HR, Marketing & International Relations, University of Northampton

This in-person conference will take place between 10.30 am and 3.30 pm (registration from 10.00 am).
