Follett Report and joint working

The Follett Report to the Secretary of State for Education and Skills was published in September 2001 following events at Alder Hay Children's Hospital that highlighted serious inadequacies in the management of staff who worked across both the HEI and the NHS trust.

The report reviewed recruitment, appraisal, disciplinary procedures and reporting arrangements for senior NHS and HEI staff who have a cross over in their academic and clinical duties.

The Follett recommendations (or principles) are key to establishing the joint working between NHS and HE that is so vital for strengthening accountability.

The recommendations apply to consultant level clinical academics in England but all UK HEIs are encouraged to apply them to ALL clinical academics as far as possible.

The report is essential reading for all HR practitioners in medical schools and NHS Trusts along with the accompanying legal commentary.

A short checklist is also available, to be used in conjunction with the legal commentary and the report in order to assess compliance. Follett compliance should also be considered in conjunction with the Joint Working Checklist
