Employers signal an opening position for pay envelope uplift

UCEA and the HE trade unions met today (26 March 2019) as New JNCHES for the first of the three agreed meetings of HE pay negotiating round for 2019-20*. UCEA explored all elements of the trade unions’ joint claim submitted on 19 March**.
 
UCEA’s opening statement*** emphasised how participating HE institutions are this year facing unprecedented financial challenges including very large increases in employers’ pension contributions and both parties will be exploring the data they presented further. 
 
UCEA opened the negotiations, on behalf of the 145 participating universities, with an initial envelope for discussion of 1.3% across all the elements of the pay claim. UCEA’s negotiators wish to discuss all the unions’ pay claim components including uplifts for the lower paid.
 
We look forward to constructive negotiations to seek an outcome during the scheduled meetings ahead that will balance fairness and affordability across the sector.

The five HE trade unions are EIS, GMB, UCU, UNISON and Unite.
The three scheduled meetings for 2019 are Tuesday 26 March, Thursday 11 April and Tuesday 30 April.
