Recruitment: searching and sourcing using social media

Although the social web has been with us for a number of years, it is a challenge to know which social media platforms – LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or Google – are the most appropriate to use to create interest in organisations as employers and to advertise and ultimately fill vacancies. This challenge can be even more so for the HE sector - a specialist area of recruiting.

UCEA has designed this hands-on workshop in conjunction with Perry Timms, adviser to the CIPD on social media and HR who is the lead facilitator. The workshop is designed to help recruitment professionals in HE institutions to cut through this bewildering, fast paced and complex world. Using a mixture of live demonstrations and small group work, the workshop will inform participants as outlined below. Delegates will be asked to provide, in advance, examples of the vacancies that they aim to recruit to using social media.
  • Identifying the best online platforms for creating interest in your institution, for advertising roles and attracting candidates.
  • How to best use those platforms with illustrations of great practice and application from a range of complementary organisations (platforms will include specifically but not exclusively LinkedIn; Twitter; Facebook; YouTube; Google).
  • Building a strategy and plan for the use of social media platforms - how best to integrate amongst a range of other online tools such as career sites; job boards; community social hubs.
  • Creating a content strategy around employer brand plus career and job postings.
  • Creating a community and advocacy programme using social media platforms to leverage hiring manager and brand advocate social networks.
  • Success criteria and building an adaptive method for utilising social media platforms.
This very hands-on workshop will include:
  • Short keynote type presentations to highlight contextual and specific elements of the recruiting world using social media.
  • Small group work to search and source via the social web specific vacancies; specialist areas and benchmark competitor social media presence
  • Show and tell demonstrations of platforms, tools and tips in using those platforms;
  • Social recruiting specialist Julie Bishop of Jobhop will co-facilitate the workshop; and
  • Question and answer / surgery sessions with expert course facilitators.

The workshop will run on Tuesday 12 November from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm (registration from 9.00 am). The workshop will take place at a central London venue.

For more information read the  timed programme.

The workshop is primarily aimed at HR colleagues, though colleagues working within academic departments involved in promoting vacancies directly via academic networks will benefit from attending.

As the day will be ‘hands-on’, participants will need to bring at least one internet-ready device with them – for example an android or i-Phone, a tablet device or laptop with them on the day. Full wi-fi access will be available for attendees.
