Core mediation skills (including mediating remotely)

Aimed at HR professionals, managers and others responsible for staff mediations in HEIs this workshop on 18 and 20 June 2024 is designed to give attendees a grounding in the knowledge and skills needed to intervene effectively when conflict develops, and to conduct a mediated intervention in the most commonly experienced work scenarios. This workshop is essentially our previous ‘Core Mediation Skills’ workshop adapted for online delivery and to cover considerations around mediating remotely.

The workshop is split over two half-days and is delivered via Zoom using a mixture of plenary, breakout sessions and role plays to provide an opportunity to put the theory into practice. It is aimed at those who have had no formal training in mediation skills or conflict management, or those who have previously received training and are seeking a refresher course that incorporates pointers and tips on mediating in an online environment.

The workshop leader has extensive experience in delivering certificated mediation training in mediation skills within the HE sector, and has consistently received excellent feedback from previous participants. She mediates regularly for HEIs across the UK.

The workshop will cover:

  • Conflict: the common causes, how to spot it including when working remotely, and how to intervene.
  • Mediation: what it is, the role of the mediator and how to use a collaborative approach to resolving conflict both in person and online.
  • The key mediation skills and techniques to help shift parties from seemingly intractable positions to interests and common needs.
  • A robust process to support you and the parties.

The format of the workshop will comprise:

  • A blend of theory with activities and practical tools.
  • Discussions around case study scenarios where mediation skills can be used.
  • Demonstration of mediation skills.
  • The opportunity to put the skills into practice through role play and other practical exercises.
  • Small group and paired work.
  • Pre-work for session two is to watch a 50-minute demo film of a mediation.

Previous attendees of this workshop said the following:

  • Really well structured and I learned a lot, but it was good to still be able to relate it to my experience.
  • A really high quality, well-organised and enjoyable training event. Thank you!
  • I enjoyed the course immensely, particularly the first session, I found myself excited by the topic and content, it was well delivered and very informative.
  • A great course, it worked really well online, and great facilitation - thank you.
