Former UCEA Chief Executive awarded OBE for services to higher education

UCEA is delighted to announce that our previous Chief Executive, Helen Fairfoul, has been awarded an OBE for her services to higher education in the New Year Honours 2023. Helen led UCEA for more than seven successful years before retiring in early 2020. Helen joined UCEA in 2007 as Deputy Chief Executive, having previously been HR Director at the University of Roehampton. Helen has also served on the Board of Northumbria University since 2020, and is Chair of its Employment and Finance Committee.

During her time at UCEA, Helen’s commitment and dedication was instrumental in the success of multi-employer pay bargaining in higher education alongside joint working with trade union colleagues on several important issues. Helen worked tirelessly to build good working relationships with sector stakeholders during periods of significant uncertainty and economic challenge. Helen also developed significant international influence during her time at UCEA, establishing international higher education employment relations with partners in Europe, Australia and Canada.

Helen’s leadership left UCEA in good stead as it continues its excellent work in supporting sector institutions in their many employment challenges.

Professor George Boyne, Chair of UCEA, said:

“The Board and I are hugely proud that Helen’s work at UCEA has received this honourable recognition. Helen’s commitment and guidance was instrumental in moving HE employers forward through challenging times. Helen maintained positive trade union dialogue, even against a backdrop of disputes, to maintain the remit of multi-employer pay bargaining. Helen also led important areas of work for the sector, including better understandings of pay gaps, through joint working with the trade unions. The Board warmly congratulates Helen Fairfoul on this recognition of her achievements.”
